Your wedding morning sets the tone for everything that follows — and while the excitement builds, it’s easy to forget the little details that make those first few hours feel relaxed, memorable, and (most importantly) stress-free. At Elms Barn, we’ve seen hundreds of wedding mornings unfold, and we’re here to share our top tips for a beautifully smooth start to your big day.
Start the Day Before
Your wedding morning doesn’t really start on the day — it starts the night before. Lay out your accessories, steam your outfit, prep your flat lay details (like perfume, shoes, invitations, and jewellery), and try to get a good night’s sleep. The calmer your prep, the calmer your morning.
Build a Gentle Timeline
Whether you’re getting ready on-site in our gorgeous cottages or elsewhere, make sure you have a clear, flexible schedule. Allow plenty of time for:
Hair and makeup (plus buffers for overruns)
Getting dressed (button loops take longer than you think!)
Calm moments for photos
Time to eat something!
Bonus tip: Always add at least 30 minutes more than you think you need — then you won’t be rushing.
Keep Your Circle Close
Surround yourself with people who make you feel calm, happy, and supported. Whether that’s your bridal party, a parent, or your best friend from childhood — choose presence over pressure. You want laughter, not logistics.
Set the Mood with Music
Create a getting-ready playlist to help guide the mood. Something chilled and acoustic to start, then dial it up with a few singalong favourites once the buzz kicks in. Music instantly sets the tone (and makes for great background in your videos and photos).
Choose a Calm, Tidy Space
If you’re getting ready on-site at Elms Barn, make the most of the soft natural light, elegant décor, and quiet countryside surroundings. A clean, uncluttered space not only keeps your mind calm — it also helps your photographer get beautiful, clean shots of your details and those candid moments.
Don’t Forget to Eat (and Hydrate!)
We know, the nerves can kick in — but you’ll need fuel to keep you glowing (and going). Ask someone to be in charge of snacks and drinks. Think: fruit, croissants, crackers, and plenty of water (plus a cheeky glass of fizz if that’s your style 🍾).
Have a Prep Kit Ready
Create a little kit for the morning that includes:
Tissues
Deodorant/perfume
Safety pins
Hair grips
A mini sewing kit
Lip balm
Painkillers (just in case)
Your day will be smooth sailing if you’re prepped for anything.
Use a Crochet Hook for Buttons
If your dress has those tiny loop buttons, trust us: bring a crochet hook. It’ll save time, stress, and your nails.
Wear a Button-Down or Robe
Make sure you wear something that’s easy to take off once your hair and makeup are done. A soft robe or a button-down shirt means no pulling anything over your head — and your glam stays perfectly intact.
Take a Moment for Yourself
Whether it’s writing a letter to your partner, reading a note from them, or just stepping outside for a deep breath — carve out a few quiet minutes for you. This is your day. Soak it in.
Final Thought:
Your wedding morning doesn’t have to feel rushed, chaotic, or like something to “get through.” With a little planning and the right people around you, it can be one of the most special parts of the entire day.
At Elms Barn, we’re here to make sure every part of your wedding — including those magical first few hours — feels full of calm, joy, and beauty.
